After driving from Negombo for 2 hour 40 minutes, we arrived at Koggala Beach.
A little bit further to the beach to the east, there is a small stretch of beach where you can find stilt fishermen.
Do you see the red bubble in the picture below from Google map, there is where you can find them!
However, if you read lonely planet’s description of them, you will find out that they are not real stilt fisherman. To see them on the poles on the beach and take photographs of them, you gotta have some moolah. 🙂
We got there in the late afternoon waiting for the sun to about to set. There was virtually nobody there except for a couple who were posing in front of the setting sun. It’s a serene beautiful little beach.
We negotiated with the guy who appeared to be in charge and decided on getting 2 fishermen in front of the rock where the sun was setting between the gap of the two rocks. (Thanks for my boyfriend’s perfect planning).
And there they go heading off to the poles in the sea acting their hearts out for 20 minutes, where we ran everywhere on the beach trying to capture their performance from every different angle (Make sure you wear shorts because your feet will be wet!). The result was spectacular! Couldn’t be happier with the photos I got.
(Our driver told us there were real stilt fishermen out there but you do need to catch them in the early morning. Unfortunately we tried to see if they appeared the next morning but none were found and we had to move on…)
