I was sharing a cab with a colleague on a business trip and I mentioned finding the best seat on the plane with seatguru. I was surprised a seasoned traveller like him does not know seatguru exists!

Seatguru.com is a website that offers seat maps on the planet, seat reviews and they indicate which seat is good or bad or might have problems with a simple color-coded system. If you are able to pre book your seats on the plane, this is the first stop!

Here is how it works.

  1. Go to seatguru.com. At the top of the website, you should see “FIND SEAT MAPS”, enter your airline, flight number, and date if you have them and click the orange “FIND SEAT MAP” button.

2. If you don’t know your flight number, click “I don’t know my flight number” and enter the airline, destination and date, and it will list the flight you are looking for

(Click the screen cap if you need help where to enter the details)

3. Click “View Map” button.

Note on the left you will need to choose the correct version of the aircraft. Usually you will be able to find which version/model you will be flying by checking the official airline website.

4. The good seats are indicated in green. The bad ones are indicated in red. Easy, right? The ones in yellow has its own problems that you need to be aware of.

For example, on this flight, if you think all exit row seats are created equal, BEWARE! The one closest to the door is sometimes restricted because the exit door protrudes into your legroom. Click on the seats and it will give you notes on the seats and the amenities such as AC Power and TV screen.

It’s a useful tool in your travel tool box! If you are paying for a seat on the plane, better make each penny worth it!
